Two organizations two countries - one concern

In order to be able to support the children and schools as quickly as possible, we founded two associations with similar statutes and the same mission in 2022. Pamodzi Sambia e.V. in Germany and Ife Pamodzi Christian Organization in Zambia are close partners and look after the sponsored children together. While the German association maintains contact with donors, collects sponsorships and donations and takes care of the administration, the members of the association in Zambia take care of the practical side of things: home visits to the families, paying school fees, being the contact person for the sponsored children and at the same time their mouthpiece to the outside world.

“Pamodzi” means ‘together’ in Nyanja, the local language in Lusaka.

Background

In 2017, Friederike Wehrmann, the German chairwoman of the association, traveled to Lusaka in Zambia for a few months for the first time to visit acquaintances who were building local schools and supporting infrastructure projects in poor districts with their NGO. At one of the schools, she met the teacher Titus Sinyangwe Junior, and a Zambian-German friendship quickly developed. He is the current chairman of the Zambian association.

It quickly became clear: School construction projects are valuable and important, but a school also needs to be filled with life! And families in poor neighborhoods in particular need financial support to be able to send their children to these newly built schools. When income is scarce, school education becomes a luxury. Children need targeted support to be able to go to school. This gave rise to the Zambian-German idea of a sponsorship program that defines school education as the key and individual support as a tool.

Connected to a friendly German umbrella organization and an existing Zambian NGO, the first sponsors were found in Germany in 2017 for children from Kabanana, a district on the outskirts of Lusaka. Monthly donations financed school attendance for those most in need. Initially, only pupils from the school where Titus worked as a teacher were supported. In 2020, we finally broke away from the institution and have been supporting children regardless of the school they attend ever since. This also gave rise to the idea of a separate association structure: the Zambian association was founded in 2022, followed a few months later by its German counterpart.
