Why education?

We see education as a key to giving disadvantaged children a better future.

Like every child in the world, children in Zambia have a right to education and to develop their personality. School education equips children and young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead a self-determined life. Attending school can enable children from disadvantaged families in particular to break the cycle of poverty and exploitation in the long term. Studies in Zambia have shown that girls in particular who receive a school education are less affected by unwanted child marriage and early pregnancy. It has also been found that the higher the level of education of the parents, the better cared for and nourished their children are.

Since 2000, Zambia has made significant progress in the area of school education and most children are able to attend elementary school. Nevertheless, over 20% of children in the Lusaka region have not completed elementary school. In addition, less than half of the children, especially girls, are able to attend secondary school. Often families cannot afford the cost of their children’s education or need the children as laborers. By enabling children from disadvantaged families to attend school, we as an association support children in shaping their own lives and developing their full potential.

Why donate?

“Bear one another’s burdens” is written in the Bible in Galatians 6:2. Based on our Christian view of humanity and the concept of charity, we are motivated to help people who are not as well off as those of us who live in the western world. Some of the people in Zambia live in living conditions that are unimaginable for us: Hunger, financial and material poverty, injustices and worries. As everywhere, children are the victims of a system over which they have little influence. Yet they are the future of a country! But if this generation grows up without education, without the ability to question structures, marked by poverty and hunger – how can they break the vicious circle of poverty?

The ideal, of course, is for the state to take care of school education in such a way that associations, non-governmental organizations and donations become superfluous. Unfortunately, the current situation is that Zambia is so indebted and economically weak that the education of the poorest is not (or cannot be) prioritized. This is where we want to help and support the most disadvantaged to build a better life for themselves than their parents could or did. This starts with skills and knowledge that pave the way for a self-determined life and gainful employment.

The seemingly flat statement is very true: €5 a month is not a lot of money for us, but it makes a real difference to a child in Zambia! Hopefully our sponsored children will be able to give their own children a better life one day – thanks to your sponsorship today. We see the sponsorship program as an investment in the future.
