Like every child in the world, children in Zambia have a right to education and to develop their personality. School education equips children and young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead a self-determined life. Attending school can enable children from disadvantaged families in particular to break the cycle of poverty and exploitation in the long term. Studies in Zambia have shown that girls in particular who receive a school education are less affected by unwanted child marriage and early pregnancy. It has also been found that the higher the level of education of the parents, the better cared for and nourished their children are.
Since 2000, Zambia has made significant progress in the area of school education and most children are able to attend elementary school. Nevertheless, over 20% of children in the Lusaka region have not completed elementary school. In addition, less than half of the children, especially girls, are able to attend secondary school. Often families cannot afford the cost of their children’s education or need the children as laborers. By enabling children from disadvantaged families to attend school, we as an association support children in shaping their own lives and developing their full potential.
